The Hanzo Cocktail Recipe
A twist on the Old Fashioned cocktail, The Hanzo, adds seasonal fall flavors to create a drink that is a tipping point to the upcoming holiday season. Created by Eddie Garcia, Lead Mixologist at jade bar at Sanctuary on Camelback Mountain Resort & Spa in Scottsdale, Arizona.
2 oz cinnamon smoked Woodford Reserve Bourbon (recipe below)
¼ oz. five-spice simple syrup (recipe below)
2 dashes Fee Brothers Cardamom Bitters
Place ingredients in a mixing glass. Fill glass with ice and stir with a spoon for 20 seconds. Pour into a Double Old Fashioned glass filled with fresh ice. Garnish with lemon zest and serve.
Cinnamon Smoked Woodford Reserve Bourbon Recipe:
Woodford Reserve Bourbon
Pour Bourbon into a shallow pan and cover with plastic wrap to seal the pan. Make small chips out of the cinnamon sticks. Take a smoking gun and smoke the cinnamon chips. While the chips are smoking, lift a small part of the plastic seal and let the smoke fill the pan. Once smoke has filled the pan, reseal and let sit for 30 seconds.
Five Spice Simple Syrup
16 oz. water
4 cinnamon sticks
5 Star Anise
8 Szechwan Peppercorn
½ teaspoon of fennel
1 cup raw, unbleached sugar
Bring water to a boil and add spices. Allow to boil for five minutes and bring to a simmer. Keep on low heat until water has been reduced by half. Take mixture off heat and add 1 cup of sugar. Let sit until cool. Strain with a cheese cloth.
