Mint Julep Cocktail Recipe
Each year, Woodford Reserve celebrates its title as “Official Bourbon of the Kentucky Derby,” part of a longstanding history with the race, by offering $1,000 Mint Julep Cups to racegoers. These cups are served with handcrafted julep cocktails at the Derby, with net proceeds from the sales of the cups benefitting a charity.
This year’s special mint julep recipe was created by Julie Renee Williams, a globally-recognized bartender based in New York City. Inspired by her personal memories of the Kentucky Derby, Julie’s julep recipe honors the traditional Derby dessert of pecan pie, featuring premium ingredients and garnishes. The use of edible copper flakes atop caramelized pecan crumbles pays homage to the unique triple copper pot still set at the Woodford Reserve Distillery.
A theatrical bartender, Julie has over 10 years of bartending experience, has placed regularly among mixology’s top competitions, and has been behind the bar all around the world from the US Virgin Islands, to Argentina, and as far as Spain.

Edible copper flakes
Rub fresh mint around julep cup. Combine ingredients with crushed ice and swizzle in glass. Add more crushed ice, garnish with mint bunch, caramelized pecan crumbles and edible copper flakes.
To make toasted pecan orgeat: toast pecans, mix or muddle into small pieces and simmer on low heat to create a nut milk. Fine strain or use a nut milk bag to remove nut pieces, and add equal parts sugar to liquid.
